Biostatistics

Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies need a high level of statistical support from designing their product trials to analyzing the data from those trials and submitting the report to the FDA. We can help design or validate existing designs for all types of clinical trials. Taking into account statistical and cost considerations, we can advise on sample size, experiment design (including randomization schedules), when to schedule interim analyses and what stopping rules to use. We can also help draft responses to FDA queries.

Case Study

A biotech company developing neurological implants to control epileptic seizures needed a statistical plan for clinical trials. Their initial proposal to the FDA had been returned with a request for estimates of sample size and a rigorous way of handling longitudinal data.

  • Experimental design: A 2x2 factorial design with repeated measures over time
  • Simulations to develop sample size analyses based on the experimental design
  • Interim analyses to determine if the trials could be stopped early (and thus save costs)
  • Response to the FDA with new statistical procedures
  • Randomization procedure to determine which patients at which hospitals would be put into the Treatment and Control groups.
  • As the surgeries progressed, it became necessary to change part of the data collection process. Simulations again provided the necessary sample sizes
